Norderås is an old bush tomato developed in Norway as a field crop.
It produces nice globe shaped fruits with a good mild tomato flavour. They are well suited for using fresh as a slicing tomato in salads or on sandwiches etc.
Norderås is a determinate tomato that grows ca. 60cm tall with compact growth. It will need some support to keep the branches off the ground when they get heavy with fruit.
Having been created for field production in Norway it has good disease resistance and is cold hardy making it a good choice for growing outdoors in a sheltered spot.
Additional information
It was bred by A.R. Persson in the 1950s at the Norwegian College of Agriculture in Ås, Norway. It was created through crosses of various bush varieties (likely ‘Bonner Beste’ and ‘Bonita Busk’) to improve earliness, fruit set, and disease resistance for Norwegian conditions
By 1955, the best selections were released to market as Norderås bush 58 and Norderås bush 93. However, it didn’t gain wide commercial adoption that was hoped for due to the rise of greenhouse tomatoes. Created for open-field cultivation in Norway it still performs well in private gardens.
