Santiam Sunrice produces delicious cherry tomatoes that are 2-3cm in diameter on decorative looking trusses.
The tomatoes shift to peach or golden yellow when mature and they have a “popping” tomato flavour with a very nice balance or tart and sweet with somewhat fruity notes.
Santiam Sunrise is hands down one of the tastiest cherry tomatoes we have grown and it is also the favourite of many of our guests. A new classic in the making.
It is a relatively new variety created by Andrew Still at Adaptive Seeds in Oregon, USA as an alternative to the famous Sungold F1 hybrid. We think it is on at least equal footing, if not better.
We have found that Santiam Sunrise possibly use hypersensitivity response as a defence mechanism. The plants can quickly “slough off” leaves it seem to think experience any problems from the bottom up making the plant look somewhat scrappy from time to time. This made us a bit worried the first year we grew the variety. However, it does not affect the yield and we have heard others observing the same thing using seeds from a different seed source.
Adaptive Seeds pledged this variety to the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI).
