Swedes are nutritious vegetables in the Brassica family that are easy to grow.
They were an important food source for both people and their animals in Northern Europe. They are sometimes known as the lemons or oranges of the nordics due to high levels of vitamin C.
In old Ireland they were also a staple crop and one of their “claims to fame” is that they were used to carve the original Irish Jack-o-Lanterns.
The Bangholm swede is an old heritage variety that originally comes from Denmark. However, due to its many good traits it has been widely used in many countries, including Ireland.
It is interesting to note that a field trial performed in 1960-62 by TEAGASC determined that the Bangholm variety was one of the best in the trial.
Bangholm roots are of medium size with purple skinned tops and yellow flesh.
