Irish Green Pea

3.00

The Irish Green Pea is a heritage variety which seems well adapted to the local climate. It is relatively cold hardy, resistant to mildew and handles a damp climate well.

This hardy variety has a good yield of medium to small sized pods with tasty green peas in them. The peas can be eaten fresh, frozen or dried for later use.

The variety grows to a height of 1.5-2m and has pretty white flowers.

The pea was collected somewhere in Ireland around 1921 by staff from the famous Vavilov Institute gene bank. Unfortunately, it then fell out of fashion until it was rediscovered by the Irish Seed Savers Association in the Vavilov gene bank around 1990-2000. It now benefits from a wider use adapting each generation to Irelands shifting climate, keeping it safe for future generations.
