Schönbrunner Gold is a vigorous Cape Gooseberry that was selected for large fruits and good flavours at the Horticultural Research Institute in Schönbrunn, Austria. It also grows really well in Irish temperate summers with fruits ripening quite late in the season when grown in greenhouses.
The fruit of Cape Goseberies grows inside decorative lanterns that looks a bit like paper when mature. The fruit of the Schönbrunner Gold variety is large for a Cape Gooseberry with golden orange skin and a firm but juicy fruit texture. The flavour is very good with fresh citrus notes combined with tropical fruit flavours.
Cape Gooseberries are often used as luxurious snacks or as decorations in deserts, but they can also be used for other things like salads etc.
Schönbrunner Gold Grows best in Ireland in greenhouses giving it a longer growing season with fruits ripening as late as November in West Cork. While we have not grown it outdoors, it is said to be possible in a warm and sheltered location.
The variety gets quite tall and sprawling with multiple stems or vines. It will need a support to keep it upright.
Cape Gooseberries are also known as Physalis, Golden berry, Peruvian cherry, Peruvian groundcherry, Inca berry or Aztec berry.
